Direct Relief International donated $400,000 to the Council of Community Clinics on behalf of San Diego County member clinics for the outstanding services they provided during the October 2007 wildfires. Direct Relief noted that San Diego’s nonprofit health centers and clinics serve as the main point of access for medical care for thousands of low-income people who lack health insurance. The cash donation will provide additional relief now that the fires are over and will assist health centers and clinics in the affected areas that have experienced increases in patient visits, supply usage, staff costs and decreased revenues in connection with the emergency.

Thanks to a recent decision by the First 5 Commission of San Diego County to extend its contract, the Community Clinics Health Network (CCHN), a subsidiary of the Council of Community Clinics (CCC), will continue funding member clinics and other community partners to provide oral health treatment and education for young children and pregnant women in San Diego County through March of 2008.

It has long been a challenge for San Diego County’s rural residents to be able to access a full scope of clinical and specialty services. Many rural patients are low income, medically uninsured, and suffer from a disproportionately high rate of chronic diseases, but they are also geographically isolated and often lack adequate transportation.

For close to 30 years, the Council of Community Clinics (CCC) has supported community health centers that serve as the health care safety net for low income and uninsured residents of San Diego and Imperial Counties.
